Service
From Citizens
The Macedonians required
service from their citizens in a couple different ways. First off people did
work in the army. Many people were trained and not just called up. Also there
were mercenaries. However some farmers were called up when they were needed.
When they were called up they would be trained for cavalry and infantry. (Cambridgevol7pp140)
Citizens were also required to do other things. In Egypt the citizens were
required to clean the canals. Their beasts of burden were required to work
with them. They would get paid, but very little. The rich could pay to get
out of it (Cambridgevol7pp201).
