ASSOCIATION WITH JERUSALEM
After Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon, he immediately seized power over
all provinces which Babylon possessed. On of these provinces happened to
be Judea. The Babylonians, after taking over Judea, forced the Jews to return
to Babylon with them and be the slaves of the Babylonians. Cyrus, being always
courteous to the people he conquered, graciously allowed the Jews to return
to Judea, their holy land. This is yet another example of Cyrus' honor and
respect for those he defeats.
The Jews refereed to Cyrus the Great as "The Lord anointed".
