Biography:
Herod was born in 73 BCE to his non-Jewish parents Antipitar and Cyprus. His career began as a governor and general, and soon Mark Antony named him the national Jewish leader. Herod was named tetrarch of Galilee by Rome and given Roman citizenship. In 42 BCE when the Parthians attacked Judah Herod fled to Rome. He returned with Roman soldiers to help him seize the throne. After becoming king he built himself a royal palace, rebuilt Stato’s tower, and rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was not finished until 63 AD. He died in 4 BCE of chronic kidney disorder, and gangrene.
