Biography:
Herod was born in 73 BCE to his non-Jewish parents
Antipitar and Cyprus. His career began as a governor and general, and soon
Mark Antony named him the national Jewish leader. Herod was named tetrarch
of Galilee by Rome and given Roman citizenship. In 42 BCE when the Parthians
attacked Judah Herod fled to Rome. He returned with Roman soldiers to help
him seize the throne. After becoming king he built himself a royal palace,
rebuilt Stato’s tower, and rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was
not finished until 63 AD. He died in 4 BCE of chronic kidney disorder, and
gangrene.
